PIE SMP: Self Maintenance Program

mission

To provide all PIE team members the opportunity to become the best persons they can be by nurturing the Mind, Body and Spirit of each individual.

To be the best interpreters/professionals possible, we must nurture our whole selves or we face becoming burned-out, irritable and neglectful of our needs as human beings. PIE acknowledges that if we foster growth in all three areas, Mind, Body and Spirit, healthier, happier and more effective professionals emerge.

mind

A core value of PIE is lifelong learning. This category will help each PIE team member grow professionally through learning opportunities. PIE strives to offer premier interpreting services. To continue to do this, we want to give our staff the opportunity to grow with various specialized trainings.

It is the goal of the SMP to host at least one large scale (open to the public) workshop, and one or two smaller workshops per year. Topics for workshops may include, but are not limited to:

  • Legal Intepreting,
  • Medical Interpreting,
  • Mental Health Interpreting,
  • Teamwork,
  • Ethical Decision Making, and
  • The Integrated Model of Interpreting (Colonomos).

body

This category works to educate the PIE team on matters of the human body. As a profession, we are typically sedentary. This category will include fun and practical ways to highlight tips and tricks we can all utilize to keep healthy and active.

Additionally, education around common injuries and how to avoid them will be made available. Hands on experiences, field trips and other activities are all possible parts of this category. Most of these will occur on a small scale and will be held in-house.

spirit

This category works to feed us the "chicken soup" we all need to feel warm on the inside. PIE's community outeach endeavors and charity work will be organized under this category.

Along with community outreach, some fun articles and creative ideas will be passed around to nurture camraderie in and around PIE to make us all better human beings which, in turn, will lead all of us to be better professionals in the community we serve. Examples may include and introduction to meditation or aromatherapy.
