PIE'S summer Terp Coordinator, Heather Fessenden, will be leaving her position at PIE at the end of September. Heather will begin her studies in massage therapy on September 15th at the Lakeside School of Massage Therapy. Heather is excited about this new venture, and she's pleased that she'll still be working with her hands, even though it's not signing. Heather hopes to still maintain ties to PIE ... she may fill-in now and then in the office. (How cool is it to know a masseuse who "gets" interpreters and their tension areas?!?) Best Wisches Heather!
Several PIE staff members recently attended the WisRID Legal Institute, "Introduction to Interpreting in Legal Settings" held in Milwaukee from September 21-24th. PIE's own Debra Gorra co-presented at the training with Atty. Carla Mathers from Maryland.
PIE wishes special congratulations! to Amy Hogel Hunter in receipt of her RID CI. Way to go Amy!!!
Laurie Sanheim has joined the full-time staff at PIE. Laurie is from Greenfield, WI. She recently completed her MA in Linguistics from Gallaudet University, and is teaching "Transliterating" in the UWM Interpreter Training Program. Welcome.
Welcome also to Erica Ziino, who also joins the PIE staff as a coordinator. Although Erica is NOT interested in becoming an interpreter, she is currently taking Sign Language classes. She is looking foward to learning the ropes around PIE. Heather will be staying on for a while to ease the transition. PIE is also enjoying the services of several UWM ITP first year students to assist with communication needs around the office. On Mondays and Fridays a student will be at PIE from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
Finally, welcome to Debbie Bilie who comes to PIE from New York State! Debbie is assisting PIE with office needs. We are thrilled to have her.
Deaf awareness week is being celebrated in Madison. To celebrate this event, PIE will have a booth at the East Towne Mall on September 30 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Lisa Perry will be manning the booth. A UWM ITP student will also be on hand. If you are in the area, check it out!
Training Coordinator, Linda Lonning continues to work diligently on PIE's workshops and training opportunities: "Personal Safety - Your First Defense" debuted on September 27 to a packed house! Former Wisconsin interpreter, Ari-Asha Castalia, will present, "Why we do the Things We Do!" on October 27th and 28th. If you are interested in more information, please contact Linda Lonning at PIE, or at our Website, at www.execpc.com/~piellc.
This past August, PIE staffer, Tim Mumm attended a Silent ASL Summer Camp for Certified interpreters in Seattle, Washington. Tim claims to have had an incredible experience involving the use of Classifiers. Don't miss an opportunity to talk with Tim about his adventure!

Ari-Asha Castalia
It feels great to have your work praised, especially by someone you respect. And once you've grown that thick skin, well-delivered constructive criticism can be helpful. Yet both of these kinds of feedback are external. Analytical feedback is different. It comes from the inside, and all of us, no matter where we are in our career development, can benefit. Join Ari-Asha Castalia in this playful yet very growth oriented workshop as she explains and models analysis. Plenty of hands on opportunities for practice, in large and small groups, will be scheduled. Brainstorm with others about how to go beyond that first question, and delve into the thought processes leading us to make the kinds of on-the-spot decisions we are called on to make every minute of our working lives. This technique can be used in peer collegial working relationships, by individuals, and in mentoring situations.
