PIE Loses an Amy…and Gains a Heather!
First, the sad news: PIE Terp Coordinator Amy Boschke has left her position at PIE. She is moving back to San Jose, California. Amy had been with PIE almost a year. Her boyfriend, Vince, works in California, and Amy will be moving to be with him. We wish her the best and will miss her!

Now, the happy news: PIE has hired Heather Fessenden to fill-in as full-time Terp Coordinator! Heather moved to Wisconsin from Massachusetts last September, but she is originally from California. Her first day with PIE was May 26. She will be learning the ropes from Terp Coordinator Amy Fryman. Heather loves Mexican and Japanese food, she digs alternative folk music and the Beatles, and has two dogs, Hannah and Max, who together weigh 140 pounds! (That’s a lot of dog! Hannah is Briard and Max is a Lab mix.) Heather has aspirations to enter ITP at UWM in Fall 2001. Welcome, Heather!!!

*This just in!!! Heather celebrated her 30th birthday on June 4th. She also got engaged on the same day! Big congrats, Heather!!

KENTUCKY DEAFESTIVAL REVIEW
For Memorial Day weekend, A la Mode Editor, Amy Free, had the opportunity to attend Kentucky’s DeaFestival 2000. The annual DeaFest is held in a different Kentucky city each year. Covington, which is located directly across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, was the host city for this year’s festival. The festival was an all-day, free admission event, held on Sunday, May 28. The main stage/“Spotlights” stage was emceed by Nathie Marbury, and featured performances by a Deaf Cuban dance troupe, Matthew “Magic Morgan”, and a Deaf/Hearing Jazz Group from the Washington D.C. area. In the Children’s Area, kids of all ages enjoyed performances by Peter Cook. At the Cultural Traditions stage, Sam Supalla did a presentation about name signs. Several Deaf Artists, including Chuck Baird, Iris Arande, and Susan Dupor, displayed their works at the festival. The event was heavily attended. Free Sunny Delight juice and water was provided by one of the event sponsors, Proctor and Gamble. It was a fun time.

DISPELLING THE MYTHS
by Debra C. Gorra, Co-Owner

Many of you have heard some rumors about me. Thank you to those who came straight to me to clarify those rumors. For those of you who are still wondering, the rumors are NOT true. I do NOT intend to sell my half of PIE and/or quit PIE. All of my certifications remain in good standing, which means I did NOT get them taken away. (You may contact the national RID office to verify this.) I am NOT getting a divorce. I am happily married, and we just celebrated our one year anniversary on June 4th. I plan to stay with my wonderful husband forever!

If anyone hears information in the future, I would appreciate you contacting me directly.
You have my word – I will give you an honest answer.

Trainings Corner
PIE’s Training Coordinator is working diligently in recruiting presenters and setting-up future trainings. Workshops will be advertised.

Some PIE employees requested Debra and Stephanie to do a “share shop” regarding mentoring methods they use.

A group met at PIE on May 12 & 13 to discuss and learn from each other. We are all endeavoring to improve our knowledge in this area.

Coordinators’ Corner
Hello to all PIE employees! Here are a few helpful tips from Amy Fryman and Heather…

When you call the office and get our voicemail message, please leave a message. Please DO NOT hang up and continue to call until someone answers, unless it is an emergency. If you reach voicemail, it may mean that only one coordinator is in the office and is currently on the other line. Customers are able to hear the other line constantly ringing in the background. So, if it is not an emergency, please, just leave a message on voicemail.

Secondly, and most importantly, if we contact you about a job, PLEASE – as soon as you are able – call the office back and let us know if you are or ARE NOT available to do the job. Sometimes, a specific interpreter is requested, so we try that terp first, and wait for her/his response. We need to know if we must contact other terps to fill the job.

THANKS for your cooperation!!
